Most Common Types of CNC Routers

By ShopBot Tools, Tuesday, September 7, 2021

CNC routers are machines that cut materials into programmed shapes. You can use ShopBot CNC Routers with wood and plastic as well as non-ferrous metals and foams, making them great for a wide variety of individuals and fabrication businesses. The differences between various forms of CNC routers are largely due to the size and shape of the complete tool. Here are the most common types of CNC routers available.

5-Axis

The 5-Axis CNC router utilizes a moving table and router to cut objects in three dimensions (X, Y, and Z axes). It can also rotate along two additional axes for even more versatility. This means that the only surfaces of the object that it does not reach are the bottom and the areas that are clamped to hold it in place. You don’t have to rearrange the setup of the machine to complete a three-dimensional object.

Gantry

ShopBot’s full-sized gantry tools have a stationary table on which a gantry holding the router can move to allow for X, Y, and Z movements. They can cut, carve, and drill materials at high speed and possess sufficiently substantial proportions and power to be effective in industrial three-shift factories where heavy usage is a requirement. The PRSalpha, for instance, can attain cutting speeds of 600 inches per minute and rapid transit speeds of 1800 inches per minute without diminishing accuracy.

Desktop and Portable

Sometimes, the cutting jobs that you wish to complete only require a small surface area. You may value ease of setup and portability over having a large capacity for the shaping of big sheets of material. Desktop CNC routers are useful because you can place them on any firm table without taking up too much space since they do not attach to a standing frame like the 5-Axis and gantry tools. If you design prototype parts, these smaller routers are perfect for fabricating in short amounts of time so you can test and refine them quickly.

Custom

ShopBot also produces custom spec CNC routers to suit a variety of shop spaces and specific production needs. From custom dimensions to Dual “Z” Spindles, 5-Axis head on a gantry tool, Automatic Tool Changers (ATC) and more. Contact ShopBot to explore the possibilities!
