If you're looking for a production-ready tool, ShopBots offer a right-sized, agile solution for many manufacturing tasks – easily configured to your production needs – small or large, 3-axis or 5-axis. The ShopBot Buddy and PRSAlpha series are two of our more popular tools for prototyping and production uses. Our software can integrate easily into your existing processes so you can quickly put CNC automation to work.

Hardware:
It is difficult to recommend one system that is universally appropriate for all educational settings. A first question will be whether a small tool is needed for a classroom (for this, our Desktop, Buddy 32, or Buddy48 will work well) or whether there is full shop space available (for this latter we would recommend a 4x8 size gantry tool). Whether large or small, all ShopBots have full power and full cutting and machining capabilities, all use the same control system, and all come with the ShopBot PartWorks CAD/CAM design software that is licensed for 10 seats.

The second question in educational settings is budget. We believe that a PRSalpha is a good choice of type of ShopBot for education because the motors and drives in this system are high speed and technologically sophisticated and will provide students experience with the kind of performance found in industrial settings. However, if the question is one of getting CNC into the curriculum at the lowest cost, then a PRSstandard will perform well, differing primarily in having lower production speeds. In this section we've recommended three PRSstandard Education Systems for you to consider.

A similar choice faces educators in terms of router vs. spindle and universal vacuum for holding parts. A spindle and a universal vacuum pump would most completely model the industrial or commercial production situation; however, great CNC work can be done with a standard router and purpose-designed hold-downs. So, we list here a PRSstandard 96-48 with router as an example tool.

Software:
ShopBot's PartWorks (CAD/CAM) design system comes with a 10 seat educational license (+15 seats for a second license). ShopBot PartWorks (and PartWorks 3D) is an easy system to teach your students, and you will be able to do a wide range of CNC work with it. For high-end modeling and sculpting we recommend Vectric's Aspire software (available from ShopBot). For engineering-oriented programs or projects, PartWorks can be used in conjunction with AutoCad products or with a modeling program like Rhino. PartWorks is also now being used with Google’s Sketchup program.
