2008 Jamboree

ShopBot Jamboree 2008, October 16-17

Jamboree A Few Highlights!

Dennis Michaud discusses backyard Shed he designed with Larry Sass (MIT). Shed/workshop/studio was cut by Bill Young and Robert Bridges entirely with a ShopBot. Using techniques similar to those developed for the innovative "New Orleans" House on display this summer and fall at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), they've created a versatile concept for digital fabrication of backyard sheds built entirely with interlocking plywood parts and assembled without nails or screws using only a mallet. (Assembled on site at this year's Jamboree!)

Brian Moran and James Booth introduced amazing new 3D sculpting and modeling software from Vectric called Aspire. Aspire is a CAD/CAM program for those wanting to create relief carvings. It combines incredible features, a new ease or use for 3D software, and a remarkable low price. It comes with 50 pieces of 3D clip art from James' VectorArt-3D collection. Aspire will be priced at $2,000. But will have an introductory price of  $1,750 until the end of the year. For owners or PartWorks or V-CarvePro the introductory price will be $900. (Available today from ShopBot for PartWorks owners.)

Scott Cox described several approaches to using the ShopBot 4th axis indexer; he described several interesting rotary accomplishments with the new Aspire software.

Robert Ball discussed the challenges and rewards of starting a new business and conveyed his enthusiasm creating bat habitats (habitatforbats.org). ShopBot-based production has become an important part of his operations.

Ray Chapman explained about how to price signmaking and CNC jobs based on many years of experience with sign customers.

Jon Santiago, from the Sustainable South Bronx FabLab, spoke about integrating CNC into 'green' job, production, and recycling strategies. An Interview with Jon from the Maker Faire >>>

<LEFT  ShopBot unveiled a new Z-axis upgrade kit for all older
ShopBots (PR and PRTs). This new Z uses the same
10-wheel, Bishop-Wisecarver Utiltrack system currently
shipped on PRS ShopBots. Replaces the older T-Rail system.
Comes with mounting brackets and motor mounts for every
older version. Ready for PC router mount or spindle. Depending
on version, you may need to drill a few holes. ($1,295 for 6" plunge version; call ShopBot.)

About the ShopBot Jamboree

As part of our quest to make it easier for ShopBotters all over the country to attend the Jamboree (and because the Maker Faires have been so much fun for all the ShopBotters who have attended), this year the Jamboree will be held in Austin, Texas on October 16-17, the two days leading up to Maker Faire Austin.  Like all Jamborees, we'll have presentations on all kinds of ShopBot-related topics, vendors set up on Friday afternoon to talk about their products, a chance to show off your creativity during Show & Tell and lots of time to talk to other ShopBotters. And, if you really want to immerse yourself in the Jamboree experience, you'll be able to camp on the grounds with some of ShopBot's staff and friends.

Location: All events will be held on the grounds of the Travis County Exposition Center, Austin Texas (Map of the area)

Registering: The registration fee for the Jamboree is $35 and includes a t-shirt, breakfast and lunch on Thursday and Friday, a BBQ cookout on Thursday evening at ShopBot's Campers in the RV lot, and a one-day pass to the Maker Faire on Saturday or Sunday after the Jamboree is over. As a special incentive to get people to sign up early, if you sign up by Oct 1 you'll receive a special-edition ShopBot CD/DVD case! You can register by calling ShopBot from 9-5 on Monday thru Friday at 888-680-4466

Camping onsite: Information on camping at the fairgrounds, both tent and RV, is available at http://makerfaire.com/austin/2008/camping/

ShopBot Training session on Wed Oct 15th: In addition to the regular Jamboree events, we'll be hosting an abbreviated one-day version of the ShopBot training. There's no change for this class but it's very popular and space is limited, so call ShopBot early to register.

Special Women's class on Friday Oct 17th: This special session, taught by Sallye Coyle, is open to all interested women and no ShopBot experience is required. It's held on Friday morning from 9-12 and is free of charge. It does require a separate registration, though, so contact Sallye to sign up.

Official Maker Faire Hotel: If you decide not to camp, the Make folks have negotiated a special Maker Faire rate at the Radisson Hotel and Suites in downtown Austin ($147 room rate). To access this special rate, please go to the Austin Radisson site using the unique promotional code, MAKER (the promo code area is located in the column on the right hand side of the page under the header: Search for Special Rates).  This hotel is right next to the famous Congress Avenue Bat Bridge and within easy walking distance of 6th Street, the heart of Austin entertainment. It's about a 20 minute drive to the Jamboree and Maker Faire.]
